Obituary for Albert Aloysius Holtz Albert A. Holtz, 84, of Earlville, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Per Albert’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earlville, the family will greet friends from 9:00 -10:15 a.m. at the church.
Burial with military rites will follow the Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Earlville. A dinner and celebration of his life will follow at St. Joseph’s Hall, where you can spend time with the family. Arrangements by Clifton – Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville.
Albert A. Holtz was born in Littleport, Iowa, on April 7, 1934. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1956. On June 18, 1956, he married Lucille Gibbs at St Joseph’s Church, Earlville, Iowa.
Albert spent his married life living in Earlville and raised his seven children there. A month after he was married he was drafted in the Army – from 1956 to 1958 and spent 16 months in Korea. Albert worked most of his career life at John Deere Tractor Works in Dubuque, Iowa, retiring in May, 1989.
His love for cars led him to open a repair shop and used car lot in Earlville in 1984, “Al’s Repair and Used Cars” In 2004 he moved his car lot to Monticello, Iowa, where is son Kevin, had a repair shop. It was then called “Monticello Auto Center”. Albert was also assistant Boy Scout Leader when his boys were in Scouts.
He was a family man and his boys got their mechanical skills by helping him. He also loved woodworking and made many pieces of furniture for his home. Albert is survived by his wife and best friend of 61 years, Lucille; six children, Kathy Duff of Manchester, Barbara (John) Glass of Earlville, Kevin Holtz (Colleen Kurt)of Monticello, David (Tami) Holtz of Cedar Rapids, Gary (Carol) Holtz of Cedar Rapids, and Richard (Dawn) Holtz of Urbana; fourteen grandchildren, Josh (Sherril), Troy, and Aaron (Taylor) Glass; Nikki (Shane) Carpenter, Laura Halweg, Heather Weber, Jenna (Sam) Garnatz, and Amy Holtz; Emily and Isaac Holtz; Chris (Courtnie) Holtz and Alex Holtz; and Logan and Claire Holtz; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sister, Marie Wulfekuhle; sisters-in-law, Virginia Leslein, Lorraine Boffeli, and Carol Raithel; and many nieces and nephews. Albert was preceded in death by his son Dennis in 1973; his parents, A.B. Holtz and Clara (Thillen) Holtz; an infant brother and sister, brothers and sisters-in-law, Frances (Wilma) Holtz, Edward (Leta) Holtz, Mathias (Alberta) Ronnebaum, Harold Wulfekuhle, Joseph (Theresa) Demeter, Jean Hampton, Eldon (Virginia) Leslein, Glenn (first wife, Rosemary and second wife, Betty) Gibbs, Richard (Margaret) Hach, Bill (Theresa) Gibbs, Al Boffeli, Earl (Josephine) Gibbs, and Art Raithel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Regional Medical Center Hospice, 613 W. Main Street, Manchester, Iowa 52057, or Camp Courageous of Iowa, P.O. Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52301 in Albert’s name.
