Albert Stephen “Butch” Lakatos, age 72, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at home with his loving wife and daughter at his side. Butch was born December 3, 1945 in Morgantown, a son of the late Albert Bill Lakatos and the late Sophia Edith (Obuch) Lakatos. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Hilda Jane Kessler Lakatos; two daughters, Tammy and husband Marty Sanders, and Heather Donley all of Morgantown; grandchildren Jessica and Matthew Sanders, and Olivia Deaner; great-children, Aubryana Benninghoff, Harper Reid and Marlin Sanders; his sister, Julia Marsh of Westover, and his mother-in-law, Ruby Kessler of Morgantown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Basorika; his father-in-law, Burt Kessler, and his brother-in-law, Bill Marsh. Butch was a 1963 graduate of Morgantown High School. Following graduation, he served in the United States Air Force until 1967.

During his service, he was honored to receive the Distinguished Service Medal. He was issued a secret security clearance from Washington DC to travel to and enter several unsecured areas throughout the world conducting classified business. Also, he served with the Special Order Group & the Military Air Wing.

He was a talented mechanic and electrician who worked in the coal industry throughout Monongalia and Marion Counties for several decades. He was an extremely intelligent man who could fix and repair nearly anything in rapid time. After his retirement, he became very involved with writing computer programs.

Butch was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He adored his grandchildren, and took the time to learn his granddaughter Olivia’s favorite cartoon characters. He was a great conversationalist who never met a stranger and possessed a wicked sense of humor.

Friends may join the family to honor Butch’s life & legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave. , Morgantown on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 from 6-8 PM and again on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery.
