Alexander’s Obituary Alex was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland to parents Margaret Hainstock and Sandy Henderson. He had an interest in music and art from an early age. Upon graduation from high school Alex joined the Royal Air Force as a telegraph operator for the next 4 years.
When returning to Edinburgh he decided to pursue a career in piano and organ repair. He became an apprentice to a gentleman who maintained large pipe organs in the cathedral churches in the British Isles and over the next few years perfected his skills in this field. At age 30 he moved to Eastern Canada and then on to New York City in America.
He met and married Blanche Marie Walker a lovely and gracious hairdresser who was working in a high level beauty salon in the Manhattan Hilton Hotel on 5th Avenue which catered to the rich and famous. Blanche and Alex shared a passion for music and art. Alex did not return to Canada and decided to make a new home in New York City.
He began attending the same local church as Blanche. After dating only 5 months the couple took the matrimonial plunge on January 31, 1956. Alex soon took his new bride back to Scotland to meet his family.
They returned to New York where they lived happily for the next 8 years. In 1964 they decided to embark on a new adventure and head West. They first headed to Vancouver, B.C. where Alex had a family member.
Canada did not work out job wise and they headed for Seattle in the United States. It was still too large for what they wanted for their new home and to raise a family so they headed south to explore Portland, Oregon. Alex took the U.S. Postal exam and was offered a full time walking route as a mail carrier.
They soon found a home they liked in Milwaukie an area SE of Portland. On November 16, 1965 they purchased their first home at 10883 SE Garrett Drive. Blanche soon opened a beauty salon business at the corner of SE Holgate & Foster Road.
She had a good business head and especially loved singing Gospel songs as she cut, colored and permed her customer’s hair. They lost two babies over the next few years. But the Henderson’s filled their marriage with wonderful friends and their furry friends.
In 1990 they joined Portland Temple under the leadership of Pastors George & Phyllis Iverson where Alex frequently prophesied from the pulpit. In 2005 Blanche was stricken by a stroke and could no longer work. Alex was her caregiver until it became too much for him and he found a wonderful family care home for her until her passing on Valentine’s Day 2009.
By 2015 Alex’s memory was failing significantly and he could no longer care for himself in his home. Being that he had no family in Oregon the Van Loo Fiduciary agency became his legal guardians. He was moved to a lovely one bedroom apartment at Somerset Assisted Living in Gladstone surrounded by walking paths among lots of trees and wildlife.
He enjoyed the social life there, music gatherings and 3 nutritious meals a day until health issues forced him to need more medical care. He was moved to Tanner Spring Memory Care after Christmas 2018. He made lots of new friends there and the staff took very good care of him along with the Kaiser Hospice team until his peaceful passing around 2:00 a.m. on January 29th 2019 at age 94.
Alex’s only surviving relatives are cousins back in Scotland and his sister- in-law Bessie Eisenkraft who is living in Montana. A celebration of his life will be open to the public on Saturday, March 9th at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to Benny Hinn Ministries or to Full Gospel Native Missionary Inc., P O Box 999, Vian, OK 74962.
