Alfred (Al) Eugene Bastin Sr, died at his home on December 18, 2018 following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 9, 1929 in Louisville, KY, but moved to Atlanta as an infant. He lived most of his life in Decatur, save for one year in Birmingham during WWII.
He was the fifth child of Clinton and Adelaide Bastin. He had three sisters: Ruth, Dorothy (Dot), and Georgia (Jo), and three brothers: Clinton Jr, Roger, and Kenneth. His brother Kenneth survives.
He… Read More » was a graduate of Decatur (Boys) High, University of Georgia (Bachelors) and Rutgers (Masters). He served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany in the Signal Corp. Upon leaving the Army in early 1954, he had two momentous events occur: He began his 41 year career at Trust Company of Georgia (later SunTrust) and he met his nephews’ babysitter and future wife, Ruth Ann Morrow.
In May of 1954, they had their first date at The Varsity, and five months later he married the love of his life. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past October. Al and Ruth were the parents of five children: Al Jr., Scott, Cynthia, Keith, and Sherri.
They also had five granddaughters: Emily, Laura, Anisa, Courtney, and Avery. He is also survived by son-in-law Rusty Godwin, daughters-in-law Carol Bastin and Lottie Bastin, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was blessed to have a career that he truly loved.
He made countless friends at Trust Company Bank and around the State of Georgia where he traveled fostering relationships with smaller banks. It was an honor for him to serve on the Municipal Securities Rule Making Board helping establish national banking rules. He had several great passions in life.
They include his church, which he and Ruth and about 70 others founded in June 1958. He served the church as Treasurer, Elder, Song Leader, and Sunday School Teacher. He helped develop Decatur Christian Towers and Gwinnett Christian Terrace, serving on the Board of Directors for over 40 years.
He served on the city of Decatur Housing Authority for 37 years. On both of these Boards, he served as Chairman for many years. He loved Atlanta and UGA sports teams, spending time at his cabin at Lake Burton and above all, the precious time he spent with his family.
A Memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, December 30th, at Northlake Church of Christ, 1625 Cooledge Rd, Tucker GA at 2:00, with a reception immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Al’s name may be made to GA Agape (3094 Mercer University Dr. Ste 200, Atlanta GA 30341) or Predisan Health Ministries (PO Box 72618, Marietta GA 30007), or your favorite charity.
