Obituary of Alfreda McCoy- Gwynn Deaconess Alfreda Debra McCoy- Gwynn, age 67, of Columbia, transitioned Friday, October 12, 2018 at Gilchrist Hospice of Columbia, MD. Mrs. McCoy- Gwynn was born August 10, 1951 in Baltimore, MD. Viewing hours will be Wednesday, October 17th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services, 5151 Baltimore National Pike, Baltimore, MD.
On Thursday, October 18, 2018, Services for, Mrs. Gwynn will be held 11:00 am at St. John Baptist Church, 9055 Tamar Drive, Columbia, MD with the family hour beginning at 10:00am. The interment will take place at Columbia Memorial Park Cemetery, Clarksville, MD on Thursday, October 18th at 1:00 pm. following services.
Deacon Alfreda Debra McCoy-Gwynn (known to family and friends as Freda) was born in Baltimore, Maryland to the late William and Irene McCoy on August 10, 1951 and made her transition to heaven on October 12, 2018. She married Kevin Gwynn on June 5, 1982 and they had one son, Kendrick Gwynn. Educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, Freda then pursued a bachelor degree in Mental Health from Morgan State University.
From college, she was first employed at Sinai Hospital as a lab technician in hematology. She switched her career to technology and rose through the ranks at IBM in management. She left IBM after fifteen years to start her own business, Case McCoy Rogers and Associates (CMRA) Incorporated.
Freda later worked for Baltimore City in the Mayor’s Office for the YouthWorks program, employing Baltimore city youth for summer and afterschool jobs. Freda later rejoined the technology and business management sector with Oracle, Incorporated and retired in 2016 after thirteen years. Outside of her career, Freda was actively involved in many volunteer organizations.
She worked with children with disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute, advocated for foster care children as a Court Appointed Specialist Advocate (CASA) in Howard County, and tutored students in reading in the Baltimore City Public School System. . Freda accepted Christ at an early age attending church with her mother every Sunday.
She loved the Lord and started every morning with her prayer team. In the early 1990s Freda joined First Baptist of Guilford in Columbia, Maryland where she served on the Usher Board. She later joined St John Baptist Church (SJBC) in Columbia in 1995 and has been an active member for over 23 years serving in various ministries including: Sunday School teacher; leading the midweek Power Hour service; Bible study leader; leading the nursing home ministry; and various other church activities.
She became the second woman ordained as a deacon at SJBC. She was honored by her church with the Golden Hearts Award in 2018 for her service to seniors. Diagnosed with a rare type of cancer in 2013, Freda did not let her diagnosis stop her compassion and servant leadership.
At SJBC Freda founded a Cancer Ministry and supported members on their cancer journey. She also volunteered for the Relay for Life fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, participated in the Cancer Awareness Team Support Ministry (C.A.T.S), and spearheaded a partnership between the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and SJBC. Freda enjoyed music, dancing, singing and the performing arts.
She loved to travel and journeyed to such places as the United Kingdom, France, China, Portugal, Italy, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica. Raised and inspired by her mother, Freda loved to be in the company of friends and family. Freda is survived by her husband Kevin, her son Kendrick, her sister Ann, her niece Kim, grand nieces Tasha and Jasmine, one aunt Helen, one uncle Lewis, and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
