Alfred Edward Wilhelm, 91, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018. He was born April 23, 1927 in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, son of the late Alfred and Edna (Kern) Wilhelm. Beloved husband and father, resident of Lawrenceburg since 1963, Al is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Beverly Anne Wilhelm; 2 sons, Frank E Wilhelm of Lawrenceburg, IN, John A Wilhelm of Lawrenceburg, IN; 3 daughters, Barbara Wilhelm of McCordsville, IN, Mary C Iannopollo of Lawrenceburg, IN, Susan (Sam) Wibbels of Louisville, KY; 9 grandchildren, Sarah (Josh) Dooley, Christopher (Ashley) McCarty, Matthew Wilhelm, Mark Wilhelm, Laura Wilhelm, Anne Iannopollo, Emily (Nick Busse) Iannopollo, Joseph Iannopollo, Patrick (Chelby) Wibbels; 6 great grandchildren and 2 on the way.

He was preceded in death by son, Paul J. Wilhelm and daughter, Margaret I. Wilhelm. Alfred was the first college graduate in his family line. He met Beverly, his wife of 68 years, at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, after his service in the Navy as a Seaman Second Class during World War II.

They married in 1950 and lovingly raised 7 children. Alfred modeled a quest for Knowledge, a commitment to love of family, and dedicated service to his life-long employer, Thatcher Glass, where he was employed as the quality control manager for 38 years. His employment began in Elmira, New York and ended in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, where he developed several strong friendships that he has maintained throughout his life.

Al and his family were long-time members of St. Lawrence Church. Al was active in the Knights of Columbus and spearheaded the Parish Council to keep St. Lawrence School from closing many years ago. His SOS (Save Our School) plan did just that.

We are proud of his role in helping this school, that all of his children attended and where his wife served as a teacher. Al was also active in the Senior Community Center in Lawrenceburg, where he and Beverly took Tai Chi classes for many years. Alfred’s greatest joy in life has been his family.

He was always ready to share adventures, help out with projects, or just sit and talk. A favorite story he enjoyed sharing was when he and Beverly received a special recognition award from Lawrenceburg High School for having attended the Honors Awards ceremonies with one or another of their children for the greatest number of consecutive years. His love for and support of his family and friends is his legacy we will all continue to embrace.

His call to us to “carry on” will be heeded with joy and thankfulness. His family relinquishes his soul into the arms of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and we look forward to being reunited together in heaven. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 12 pm to 1 pm at Fitch-Denney Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at Fitch-Denney Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 1 pm, with Father Peter Gallagher officiating. Interment will follow in the Greendale Cemetery, Greendale, Indiana. Contributions may be made to the St Lawrence School or Knights of Columbus.
