Alice Irene Carroll Young. Age 88, of Squirrel Hill, peacefully in her home, on December 17, 2018. Preceded by her husband Hugh Young and sister Edith Cadman.

Survivors include her brother Leslie Carroll; daughters Gretchen Fineman and Rebecca Young; and many nieces and nephews. She was born August 12, 1930 in a log cabin in Pricedale PA, near Belle Vernon, and graduated from Carrick High School. She was working as a secretary at Carnegie Tech when she met Hugh, who would become a Physics professor at CMU.

They married in 1960. In their early life together, Alice and Hugh enjoyed hiking, camping, rock climbing and caving around the wild places of PA and WV. Hugh co-founded the Pittsburgh Climbers, and they were both enthusiastic lifelong members.

Most summers, they drove their Jeep to the deserts of Utah to camp out in the National Parks, especially Zion, stopping to visit friends and relatives along the way. Later, they enjoyed frequent travels to Europe, and attended the marathon Wagner Ring operas in many different cities. Alice was a gracious hostess, famous for her parties and her beautiful home.

She was an excellent chef, trained in French cooking; and adventurously explored tastes from around the world as part of the CMU Cooking Group. Her home was a frequent gathering place for many events, including her annual Thanksgiving dinner, where she welcomed CMU students who could not travel home for the holiday. She always had a room ready for visiting friends and musicians, including artists from the Renaissance & Baroque Society and Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh.

She regularly attended the Pittsburgh Symphony, Pittsburgh Opera, and many other classical music concerts. She also loved to sew, and created entire wardrobes for herself and her daughters with expert skill. Later, she worked making quilted lap robes for charity with the Carnegie Mellon Womens Association.

She developed an interest in Genealogy, and traveled to Salt Lake City, UT several times to gather research from the extensive records repository there. She kept in touch with the many distant relatives she had discovered. Alice volunteered and worked tirelessly for many organizations; and donated generously to many charities dedicated to the environment, music, homeless, and women’s causes.
