Alois “Al” Vetter, 80, West Fargo, ND died on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at JA Wedum Residential Hospice, Brooklyn Park, MN surrounded by 3 of his daughters. Alois Vetter was born on November 25, 1937 in Logan County, ND to Anton and Christina (Gross) Vetter. He graduated from High School in Napoleon, ND.

After graduation, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Ellendale State Teachers College, a Masters degree from NDSU and an Elementary Principal Certificate at UND. He served six years with the ND National Guard with the highest rank of First Lieutenant and the last year as Company Commander. Al married MaryAnn Weigel on December 29, 1960, and in their first six years of marriage they were blessed with six children.

Over the next 12 years he taught school at Wilton, Napoleon, and Gardner and was an elementary principal at Larimore for five years. In 1973 Al and MaryAnn purchased the Sunset Motel in West Fargo and owned it until 2013. Al also, at one time, sold real estate and owned several rental units.

For many years he served as a volunteer on the fire department, ambulance, and the ND Jaycees, serving as the Chapter President and the ND Regional Vice President. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus where he held every office including Grand Knight. He was also on the West Fargo School Board for many years.

Al enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, his retirement hobby farm and most especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Al and MaryAnn enjoyed traveling, both as a couple and with their six children on summer family vacations. He will be always remembered as an avid story teller.

Al is survived by his wife of 57 years MaryAnn Vetter, of West Fargo, ND; Children: Mark (Sandy) Vetter, of Rochert, MN, Diane Vetter, of Robbinsdale, MN, Janet (Fran) Gerszewski, of West Fargo, ND, Carol (Tony Zimmerman) Vetter-Lane, of St. Francis, MN, Glen (Laurie) Vetter, of Napoleon, ND, and Linda Vetter, of Champlin, MN; grandchildren: Morgan, Stephanie, and Suzanne Vetter; Andy Vetter; Jennifer Norton, Sarahanne Supler, and Tanner Lautt; KaDe, McKenzy, Walker, and Preston Lane; Zachary and Dylan Vetter; and Noah, Lucas, and Elijah Vetter; great-grandchildren: JoLyssa, Brekken, and BreLee Norton, Alexis and Wyatt Supler, and Jaxon Vetter. Other survivors include his siblings: Martin (Eileen) Vetter, Christine Bitz, Irene Kuhn, Lorraine Aberle, Richard Vetter, and Barb (Jim) Volochenko; sisters-in-law: Ellen Vetter, Geneva Vetter, Bernice Vetter, Clara Helvig, Aggie (Cliff) Horner, and Betty (Ken) Huber; brothers-in-law: Tony (Pauline) Weigel, and Mike (Connie) Weigel, along with many nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Anthony and Rosalia Weigel, brothers Mathias, Joe, and Anton; sister Marcy Goven, sister-in-law Viola Eckroth, brothers-in-law Joe Kuhn, and Louie Eckroth, granddaughter Catrina Vetter, and great-grandsons Carter and Easton Supler.

Visitation: Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 5-7 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND. Rosary: Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 6:30 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND. Vigil Service: Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 7 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND Funeral Mass: Friday, October 19, 2018 at 10 AM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Fargo.

Burial and Military Rites: Friday, October 19, 2018 at Holy Cross South Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
