CDR Alva L. Phillips, Jr., USN (Ret. ), age 95, of Atlantic Beach, FL passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018. He was born in Lanett, AL on October 8, 1923 to Alva L. Phillips, Sr. and Ethel Swann Phillips; the eldest of their 4 children.

Commander Phillips honorably served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific as a fighter pilot. He proudly flew a Hellcat from aircraft carriers Shangri-La and Yorktown. He later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Georgia Tech and worked several years for Dayton Rubber Company before being recalled to Navy service in the Korean War.

He retired in 1973 at NAS Jacksonville after more than 30 years of dedicated service to his country. Upon retirement, he pursued his interest in the real estate industry and became the Secretary for the Board of Realtors in Jacksonville. He moved to Fleet Landing in 1991 and enjoyed tennis in his younger years and golfing well into his 80’s.

He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Commander Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and his first wife, Frances. He is survived by his sister, Darnell, and his brother, Reginald, both of South Carolina, and by his wife of 20 years, Suzanne.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 6, 2018 in Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fleet Landing Endowment Fund.
