Amelia C. (Rakus) Zetusky Schick, of Havertown, PA passed away peacefully on December 13, 2018 at the beautiful age of 102. Amelia was born on November 4, 1916 in Shenandoah, PA. The daughter of immigrants from Lithuania, her father died in a coal mining accident and her mother from the 1919 flu epidemic, before Amelia was five years old.
She moved to Philadelphia, attended Our Mother of Sorrows school through 6th grade, and Sulzberger Jr. High School through 9th grade. She left school to work at the Richel Cosmetics Factory for $7 a week. While she never learned to drive a car, she was extremely independent, no stranger to Septa and crushed any future FitBit records.
She was an avid reader of historical novels, a talented painter, loved to crochet afghans for her family and watched anything starring Tom Selleck. She had a wonderfully happy, healthy and successful life that included a long career working at Strawbridge & Clothier in Suburban Square in Ardmore, PA. Amelia is predeceased by her first husband of 29 years Edward J. Zetusky Sr., her second husband Irvin G. “Bud” Schick, sons The Honorable Edward J. Zetusky, Jr. and James A. Zetusky, daughter-in-law, Mary Zetusky, as well as grandson Michael Zetusky.
She is survived by her daughter Judy (Zetusky) Gallagher and son-in-law Phil of Newtown Square, grandchildren Edward Zetusky (Michele), Thomas Zetusky (Debbie), Robert Zetusky (Edith), Wendy (Gallagher) Bender (Kevin), Daniel Gallagher (Suzanne), David Gallagher (Megan), Christine (Zetusky) Horner (Kris). She was loved by 19 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren and will be missed dearly by her wonderful friends and compassionate caregivers at the Rosemont and Broomall Presbyterian Villages. A loyal parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Havertown for almost 40 years, Amelia was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary daily and had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother.
She made world-class snickerdoodles each Christmas holiday and her jingle bell earrings were legendary. On her 100th birthday, Amelia received personal commendations from Pope Francis, President Obama, and Mike Schmidt – Hall of Fame 3rd Basemen for her 1980 World Champion Phillies. You can guess which one she liked the best!
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the Funeral Mass on Friday, December 21 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, 110 N. Manoa Road in Havertown, PA. Friends may call before the Mass from 9:30-10:30 A.M. Interment at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions on Amelia’s behalf are welcomed to the Friendship Fund at Rosemont Presbyterian Village, 404 Cheswick Road Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.
