Andrew’s Obituary Lt. Col. Andrew R. “Andy” Matika, age 87, passed away Thursday afternoon January 17, 2019, at Angela Hospice.

Andrew was born January 3, 1932, in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Andrew and Lillian (French) Matika. He “proudly” served his country in the United States Army. His career took him to many countries and continents, including a tour in Vietnam during the war.

While stationed in France, Andrew learned to speak French and he learned Japanese while stationed in Japan. After his retirement from the Army, Andrew went on to work at Chrysler Corporation, the Department of Defense and the Charter Township of Shelby. Andrew enjoyed bowling, golf, trains, cars, coin collecting and attending events at the Shelby Township Senior Center.

He was also an avid watcher and follower of Detroit’s professional sports teams. In addition to his parents, Andrew was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan (Matawa) Matika. He is survived by his sons, Andrew (Debra) Matika and Russell (Cynthia) Matika; and his grandchildren Andrew (Sara) Matika and Sally Matika.

Andrew will be honored at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. A private ceremony will be held when Andrew and Joan are placed together in the Columbarium Wall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Angela Hospice in Livonia, MI.
