Anna Lillian Hartka, 100, of Sarasota, passed away peacefully July 5, 2018. Anna was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was married to Wm. A Hartka.

She was supportive and assisted her husband in managing the Mira Mar Hotel, on Palm Avenue, for nearly 30 years. Anna was also known as “The Bird Lady of Sarasota”, as she did bird rescue and rehabilitation. Later, at age 92, she founded the Sarasota Chapter of Compeer, which is an organization that matches trained volunteers with people recovering from mental illness.

The organization works with both adults and children. She was a life member of Hadassah, wrote beautiful poetry, and enjoyed drawing and sculpting. Anna is survived by her daughter, June Blaustein; brother, Joseph Lavin; grandchildren, Jeff and Mitch Hartka; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, July 9th, at Temple Beth Sholom Cemetery, 901 Circus Blvd, Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Anna’s memory to Compeer of Sarasota. Hebrew Memorial Funeral Services of Sarasota/Manatee is serving the family.
