Obituary for Archie Alley Jr. Print Archie M. Alley Jr., 87, of Beals passed away peacefully on November 4, 2018 at the Downeast Community Hospital in Machias. He was born November 19, 1930 on Great Wass Island, the son of Archie M. Alley Sr. and Minnie E. (Alley) Alley. Archie grew up a life-long resident of Alley’s Bay.

He attended the Alley’s Bay School and the Beals Grammar School. In his youth, he helped support his large family, including three brothers and two sisters, by shelling clams at night by lantern light. In 1949, Junie married his beloved wife Maxine (Merchant) Alley of Jonesport.

They were married for thirty eight years and raised their three children in Alley’s Bay by the sea. He supported his own family as a lobster fisherman and passed on this tradition to his grandson Jowen who cared for his grandfather through the latter part of his years. Archie loved taking his kids hand lining and in the spring would go halibut fishing with his son, Hiram.

When his first grandchild Bobby was born, he and Maxine made a trip to Newfoundland. Lobster boat racing was one of Archie’s favorite past times. He raced several boats including The Ellen Archie, the Swan, and the Maxine M., placing first in many competitions up and down the coast of Maine.

Junie attended basketball games and sports events supporting his children, grandchildren, and in recent years enjoyed watching his grandson Logan play for the UMM boys’ basketball team. He was a regular visitor at Ellery Alley’s garage for coffee and conversation as well as having lunch with his friends at Sunrise Healthcare Facility just down the road. Archie was a member of the Beals Advent Christian Church; a founding member of the Beals-Jonesport Co-op; and a lifetime member of the Beals Historical Society.

He will always be remembered for his dedication to his family, his big heartfelt smile, and his charming sense of humor. Archie is survived by his son Archie Alley III of Bangor; son Hiram O.
