Obituary for Arlie Neil Atwood Services for Arlie Neil Atwood, 94, of Larue, are scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Matkin officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Springs Cemetery under direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Atwood passed away January 4, 2019 in Athens.

He was born January 27, 1924 in Carter, South Dakota. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served from May 19, 1941 until September 19, 1941. He then joined the United States Marine Corp and served from June 26, 1943 until December 22, 1945, receiving a Purple Heart after being wounded in action in Guadal Canal.

He did construction work in Colorado and spent a career working in the newspaper industry He is preceded in death by wife, Catherine Wilson Atwood; parents, Hiram and Carrie Atwood; and 13 brothers and sisters. Survivors include children, Sheryl Howell of Larue, Kaye C. Klinchuch and Monte of Bakersfield, California, John Atwood and Cheri of Clovis, California; grandchildren, Shelly Matkin, Gary Howell Jr, John Howell, Jason Howell, Kara Miller, Kelli Boles, Chip Smith, Brian Smith, John Atwood and Jessica Rodriguez; and numerous great grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 10-11 AM prior to the service.
