Arthur Lee Rawlings, Jr. February 23, 1924 – December 25, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Arthur “Art” Lee Rawlings, Jr., of Joelton, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee on February 23, 1924 to the late Sophia Shadow Rawlings and Arthur Lee Rawlings, Sr. Art was the oldest of four children which include his siblings Phila Rawlings Hach and Capt. Joe Rawlings who were twins, and both preceded him in death; and a sister Clara Rawlings Davenport who survives him.

Art was the proud uncle of several nieces and nephews. Art grew up in Joelton and graduated from Central High School. He served from 1943 to 1946 in the Army Air Corps as a flight Engineer and top turret gunner in the 15th Air Force, 464th Bomb Group, 778th squadron.

He spent time in the European theater and was a prisoner of war (POW) in Nurnberg, Germany Stalag X11-D and Stalag V11-A. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and served as President and Vice President of his Bomber Group for fourteen years. He was Commander of the State and Middle Tennessee Chapter of EX-POW’s.

After the war, Art had a long career with Genesco Corporation. Art loved fishing and served as Treasurer and Board of Director of the Tennessee Spoonplugging Club for over 20 years. He loved being “Santa Clause” at the Club’s annual dinner.

He enjoyed traveling, dancing, and spending time with friends. In addition to his parents and two siblings, he was preceded in death by his first wife Elenor Rawlings and second wife Elise Yealy Rawlings. In addition to a sister, he is survived “his girls” Brenda Boyd and Kimberly Yealy; stepchildren; and longtime friend Peggy Howell.

Visitation will take place at Anderson & Garrett Funeral Home on Monday, December 31st from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of Service at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Hubert Cunningham officiating. Interment will take place at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in a private ceremony for family and close friends.
