OBITUARY Atley Asher Kitchings, Jr. June 10, 1925 – October 4, 2018 Atley Asher Kitchings , Jr., was born June 10, 1925 to Atley Asher Kitchings, Sr., and Marion Beulah Mudd Kitchings in Louisville, Kentucky, and died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on October 4, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Betty Jane Langley Kitchings. He is survived by his daughter Jane Marlea Kitchings Foster (John) of Birmingham, Alabama, his son, Atley Langley Kitchings (Edie) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Ashley Jane Foster (Birmingham), Asher Langley Kitchings (Riley, Birmingham), Elisabeth Gaillard Foster (fiancé Robin Alston, Atlanta) and Andrew Connor Kitchings (Alexandria, Virginia).

He is also survived by his brother Dr. John Taylor Kitchings (Mindy-Jackson, Mississippi) and his sister Grace Kitchings Hannah (Robert-Destin, Florida) and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Atley attended Mississippi College for his undergraduate work and received a law degree from the University of Virginia. Atley practiced law in a wide variety of positions, including the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Alabama, the Birmingham law firm of Davies and Williams, the Legal Department of South Central Bell, the law firm of Lange, Simpson, Robinson, and Somerville, and finished has career as “Distinguished Senior Member” of the Birmingham Law Firm of Wallace, Jordan, Ratliff, and Brandt.

Atley was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy, and after the war remained in the Naval Reserves for 25 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He loved the Navy. Atley was very active in Mountain Brook Baptist Church where he was a deacon for many years and was named a “Life Deacon” by the church.

He also was a member of Kiwanis International for over 50 years, serving as President of the Jackson, Mississippi club and as an enthusiastic member of the downtown Kiwanis club of Birmingham. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, Ole Miss football, and sports in general. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a scholarship that has been established in his honor at the Birmingham Kiwanis Foundation-the Atley Kitchings Youth Service Scholarship, 2019 4th Ave.

North, Birmingham, AL 35203. A celebration of the life of Atley Kitchings will take place on Monday October 8, 2018, at Mountain Brook Baptist Church at 2 PM.
