Obituary for Augustine Phillips Howard Andrew C. Sappallel Phillips and Nancy Napyer Phillips were blessed with their beautiful first born on August 11, 1935, Augustine Ruth Phillips Howard. The Phillips family loved horses. In true Phillips fashion, mom learned how to ride before learning to walk.
The family were all professional riders since a young age, Augustine and her brothers and sisters always won in many contests, they each enjoyed to compete. Augustine graduated as valedictorian from Chemewa Indian School. Mom entered the U.S. Woman’s Army Corps at age 18.
She served during the Korean conflict and she was top of her military class. She began her medical career in San Francisco, California; completing her nursing education at St. Elizabeth’s. Family and community were important to her.
She was involved with the Yakama Warriors Association, J.O.M, LICWAC, Methodist Church, Indian Nurses Association, and other organizations that serve and assist native families. Mom served 10 years for the Yakama Nation Tribal Council. She participated in the Ahtanum Mission, upon the land donated by the Phillips family.

Each of them was an important part of her life.
We will miss this special elder. She had a quiet voice, but if she had something to say, she made it known. Her lessons of life made her a strong woman.
She had medical limitations, but never let them get her down, they made her stronger. She always shared her beautiful smile as she greeted you, and had a good message for you. If you needed advice, she loved to listen and always had “good advice” of encouragement and wisdom.
The last six weeks were hard on Augustine. But today, she no longer has illness or pain, and is in a good place. She earned her wings and was ready to travel to a beautiful place.
We want to live a good life so we will be ready to rejoin her. We love you, Mom, Ullah, Kuthla, Aunty, Sister, my friend. We wish you a fast and safe journey, you will always be in our hearts.
We extend our appreciation to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Regional Hospital and all medical personnel who did all they could to comfort her with their skill and knowledge. And we can’t forget her loving and constant companion “Twinkie”. Dressing services will be Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Toppenish Creek Longhouse in White Swan with overnight services.
