OBITUARY Avis Claire Horner November 11, 1915 – August 31, 2018 Avis Horner was born Avis Claire Whatley on November 11th, 1915 in West point MS. She was one of twelve children and the last surviving member of her family. Avis lived to be 102 yrs.

old and remained vital until the end. She was a pure joy for all who were blessed with her company. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62yrs and her two daughters Pamela and Florence as well as her grandson John McNickle.

She is survived by her grandsons and their families, Steven & Kim McNickle, Russ & Robin McNickle, Mike & Jessica McNickle, Chris & Cissy McNickle and Debbie McNickle (widow of John). She has 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters along with numerous nieces and nephews. Avis met and married the love of her life, John Pleasant Horner in 1933.

Together they had two daughters Pamela and Florence. Pamela died a few days after her birth. Florence gave them 5 handsome grandsons before being called to heaven.

Avis dedicated herself to supporting her husband, her daughter and to raising 5 young men. Lovingly known as “Nana”, she touched many with her kind, thoughtful and nurturing nature. Avis was a long time member of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Mobile, Al.

where she resided most of her adult life. As a church member, she taught Sunday school and was a member of the SHBC Women’s Ministry. She served as a leader for the Women’s Ministry which was the largest women’s missionary project at the time.

There she mentored teen girls and young women, by assisting them with missionary work and discipleship opportunities. Avis will be remembered for her kind and loving spirit. She continued to touch people up to her time on earth.

She will be missed. Services will be held in the Chapel at Pine crest Cemetery in Mobile, AL. Dr. Dr. Jerry Gunnells will officiate the service.

Visitation will be at 10am and chapel services will begin at 11am.
