Barbara Ann Jones Hartis, 92, passed away Friday, January 4, 2019 at Spring Arbor of Kinston following a lengthy illness. A native of Kinston NC, who spent nearly all her life in the city, Mrs. Hartis was a retired Educator with Kinston City Schools, having taught at Harvey School and Northwest Elementary before joining the district’s administrative staff as a supervisor of federal early childhood programs. She is preceded in death by her parents William Jennings Jones and Lucy Barrow Jones for whom Jones Avenue in Kinston is named after, sister Mary Elizabeth Barrett and nephew Douglas Jones.

A graduate of Grainger High School and Atlantic Christian College in Wilson (now known as Barton College), she also held a masters degree from East Carolina University. She was a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international professional society for women educators. She enjoyed bible study, her church, taking care of her home, her family, cooking and hosting countless dinners and luncheons for extended family gatherings and friends over the course of her life.

Mrs. Hartis is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years Jim Hartis of Kinston, daughters Lucy Whaley and husband Bill of Kinston and Nancy Mueller and husband Bob of Brentwood, Tenn. Grandchildren Laura Whaley Wellington and husband Jason of Wilmington, NC, Charles Whaley and wife Lauren of Salisbury, NC, Mari Mueller Zusin and husband Mike, Will Mueller and Nick Mueller all of Nashville, Tenn. , great-grandchildren Charlie and Betsy Wellington of Wilmington, NC and Margaret and Banks Whaley of Salisbury, NC, brother Talmage Jones and wife Beth of Wilmington, NC, nephews Bryan Jones of Morganton, NC, Josh Jones of Aberdeen, MD, William and John Barrett of Dade City, FL, Bruce Barrett of Martinsville, NJ, Kevin Barrett of Plainfield, NJ, and two nieces Barbara Barrett Stickle of Macedon, NY and Elizabeth Barrett Sabo of Brighton, NY.

Visitation will be held at Howard-Carter Funeral Home from 11:00am-12:00pm with funeral beginning at 12:00pm, Monday, January 7, 2018. Entombment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. The family would like to extend special gratitude to the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Kinston.
