Barbara Bauer , January 11, 1925 — November 24, 2018

Barbara M. Bauer Barbara M. Bauer, of Bridgewater, formerly of Bound Brook, died on November 24, 2018. She was 93. Born January 11, 1925, she was a native of Parlin, New Jersey, and a very proud 1946 graduate of the New Jersey College for Women, the predecessor of Douglass College.

Mrs. Bauer and her late husband, Major General William “Bill” Bauer, a distinguished Rutgers professor in ceramic engineering, were well-known and beloved as loyal and dedicated Rutgers men’s and women’s sports fans. They were seen for many decades at almost all Scarlet Knight home –and many away—football and basketball games. The couple also could be easily spotted at early season baseball games huddled under their distinctive scarlet-and-black plaid Rutgers blankets.

At one time, the Bauers estimated they had attended 90 percent of all Rutgers football games, home and away, since World War II. The couple generously supported athletics at the university, which is home of the William and Barbara Bauer Track and Field Complex and the William and Barbara Bauer Training and Rehabilitation Center at Highpoint.com Stadium. In addition to contributing to a variety of sports –and the marching band, the couple also donated scholarships for students, including for those participating in Olympic sports, wrestling, and a pre-veterinary program.

They were both honored by Rutgers with the Rutgers Excellence in Alumni Leadership Award in 2010, the Rutgers University Medal for Philanthropic Excellence in 2004, and in 2014, they were presented with the inaugural 1869 Legacy Award for their generous support of Rutgers Athletics. Mrs. Bauer served as a member of the Rutgers Board of Overseers from 2004 until being named as an Overseer Emerita in 2017. Mrs. Bauer retired from Johnson & Johnson where she was a public relations/communications executive.

She previously worked for the Boy Scouts of America and as a program director for radio station WCTC. She was an avid horsewoman and life-long lover of dogs. Mrs. Bauer was predeceased by her husband, who died in 2015.

A private memorial celebration is being planned for the spring at Rutgers in conjunction with a Rutgers sporting event.
