Barbara Jeanne Hoover, 65, departed this life on October 14, 2018 at her home in Oyster Bay, surrounded by her family. She was born on September 4, 1953 in Jamaica, Queens, New York to the late Charles and Mary Higgins. Barbara, after graduating from St. John’s College, was employed in Human Res for Citibank, N.A. in New York City.

Her passions, beyond her sons and husband, included conservation, gardening, the Glen Cove Hospital, her English Springer Spaniels, and a love for travel.

From 2007 to 2011 she worked on the staff of the North Shore Land Alliance, a non-profit devoted to the conservation of land on Long Island. Her passion for gardening led her to join the North Country Garden Club in 1998 where she served as President from 2008 to 2010. Barbara felt strongly about having a first-rate local community hospital and tirelessly worked to provide her support for the Glen Cove Hospital, where she was a founding member of the Advisory Council and served as its Chairman since 2011.

For more than 20 years, from one to three English Springer Spaniels faithfully followed her throughout the house and yard. She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church of Cold Spring Harbor. She is survived by her husband James Bentley Hoover; sons Bradley Graham and his wife Rashel Gayed of Brooklyn, NY, Courtney James of New York, NY, and Logan Matthew of Arlington, VA; two sisters Sheila Sharpe of Durham, NC and Dianne Higgins of Raleigh, NC, and brother Paul Higgins of Melbourne, FL.

A church service in her honor will be held on Thursday October 18 at 10:30am at the St. John’s Episcopal Church of Cold Spring Harbor, with The Reverend Gideon Pollach presiding. In lieu of floral arrangements, at Barbara’s request contributions may be made to the Glen Cove Hospital, Glen Cove, NY.
