Obituary for Barrett “Barry” R. Eldridge Barrett “Barry” R. Eldridge July 7, 1943 – June 13, 2018 Barry was born July 7, 1943 in Recife, Brazil. Because his Dad worked for Pan American Airlines, the family relocated to many countries during his childhood. Barry lived his early childhood in Brazil, Pakistan, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Lebanon.
Barry returned to this country in 1961 to attend college at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. There he met, and later married, Donna. They were married for 51 wonderful years.
After living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Texas, they came to settle in California in 1976 with their three children. This would become their “forever” home. A world traveler as a child, Barry spent his working years in sales, traveling this country as a National Sales Manager for several companies and later, President of Myers Electric.
Barry retired three times from the working world before he was really ready to settle into domestic bliss. Once he had free time, he made the most of it. He loved to garden and was known in and around San Pedro as the “tomato man”.
He grew more than 100 tomatoes every year from seeds that he started in the kitchen. Once the seedlings were ready for planting, he gave them to his many friends. Barry also loved to fish and planned tournaments at Rancho Buena Vista on the East Cape of Mexico where he, his friends, and his sons placed bets on just about everything.
Barry never met a person he didn’t like or a recipe he wouldn’t excitedly try. The world and everyone in it was of interest to him. He loved to see new places, do new things, and meet new people.
He was the ultimate “people person”. He was a loyal friend who was never too busy to help. He was a frequent driver for “Meals-On-Wheels” and helped monthly at “Food Forward”.
Barry’s greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and brother. He reveled in the accomplishments of his children and granddaughters.
He was the true patriarch of his clan. Every holiday, birthday, any day, was an excuse for a family barbeque. His ribs and tri-tip are legendary.
Barry passed away unexpectedly at home in his garden, leaving behind his wife, Donna, sons Brett (wife, Leslie), Donald, and daughter Kathleen (husband, RJ) Kaloper. He also leaves behind his beloved granddaughters Tyler Eldridge and Hannah Kaloper. Barry also leaves behind his sisters Mollie and Toni, brother Richard and many nieces and nephews.
