OBITUARY Bearl Oneal Whitsett August 26, 1934 – December 1, 2018 Bearl Whitsett was born on August 26, 1935 in Rogersville, Alabama. He passed away on December 1, 2018. He was a graduate of Florence State College (UNA) and was a member of the football team.

He received the Most Valuable Back award in 1958. He was elected to the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Mr. Whitsett served Decatur City Schools for 30 years.

He was the first head coach of Austin High School, and later served as Assistant Principal and Principal. He was also a member of Decatur Rotary Club, where he served as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mattie Absher Whitsett; his mother, Marie Waddell; and his brother DC Waddell.

He is survived by his son, Greg Whitsett; daughters, Kim Whitsett Morris and Glee Whitsett Booth; brother, James Waddell; sister, Shelby Tucker, and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Roselawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Burningtree Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers: Tom Calvin, Bill Brunner, and Glen Spiller. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Humane Society or the Austin athletic booster club.
