BENJAMIN HARRIS DICKERSON May 18, 1969 – February 18, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Benjamin Harris Dickerson was born on May 18, 1969 in northern Vermont and grew up in Hanover, NH and Montclair, NJ. He graduated from Montclair High School in 1987 and then went to college at University of Richmond where he graduated with a BA in American Studies with a concentration in education. Ben also received a MA in education from Appalachian State.

Ben was passionate about teaching and received several awards for excellence in teaching. He taught at Montclair High School in Montclair, NJ, Chestnut Grove in North Carolina, and Forrestdale Middle School in Rumson, NJ. At Montclair High School, he was one of the teachers who started the Civics and Government Institute.

This is a small learning community that became a model program for the school. During his teaching career, he also coached swimming, lacrosse and soccer. Unfortunately, Ben had to retire from teaching in 2014 due to health problems related to a rare genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

He died due to complications from this syndrome on February 18, 2019 in Cleveland, OH. Ben met his wife Ellen See, who grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ, at University of Richmond. Anyone who saw Ben and Ellen together could see their love for each other.

They were married for 25 years. They had two children, Victoria (15) and Garrett (13), who he adored. He is survived by Ellen, Victoria and Garrett as well as his mother Normie Dickerson, his sister Lynn Dickerson Carmichael, brother-in-law Scott Carmichael and their children Sean and Sara.

His father was the late Rev. Park Dickerson. Anyone who knew Ben will remember him for his sense of humor, kindness, devotion to family, and his keen interest in politics.
