Mrs. Bernadine L. (Ungvarsky) Price, 92, a lifelong resident of the North End section of the city, passed into Eternal Life early Wednesday morning in the care of the River Street Manor where she recently resided. Born January 21, 1926 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter to the late John S. and Emma (Pavco) Ungvarsky. Educated in the city schools, she was a graduate of the James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre and furthered her education by attending the former Wilkes-Barre Business College.
Mrs. Price held membership in the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, having previously attended the former Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, both of North Wilkes-Barre, prior to Sacred Heart’s closure. Until her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Price was employed for some thirty years with the former Bell Telephone Company in Wilkes-Barre as a business clerk. During the Second World War, Bernadine worked locally to help provide rations to our troops overseas.
In her youth, she loved to sing, performing in various minstrel shows at Sacred Heart Church. Her talents were immortalized on several 78 rpm record albums the family cherishes to this day. A loving and selfless woman who enjoyed tradition, she opened her home hosting extended family members during the Christmas holidays over the years.
Becoming a widow at a young age, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. Walter J. Price on July 24, 1966. At the time of his passing, the couple shared some 14 years of married life together. She was also preceded by a brother, Edward D. Ungvarsky and his wife Florence; Nephew, Anthony Ungvarsky and by a brother-in-law, Gerald O’Neill.
Left to mourn her passing are her son, Mr. Steven W. Price, North Wilkes-Barre; his companion, Ms. Barbara Quinn of Kingston; Brothers and sisters including John S. (Joan) Ungvarsky of Cinnaminson, NJ; Emily (Joseph) Carone of Acra, NY; Marion O’Neill of Wilmington, DE; Elizabeth (Betsy) Ungvarsky of Weston, VT and Carl J. (Dorothy) Ungvarsky of Mountain Top; Several generations of nieces and nephews, fellow parishioners and dear friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Price will be conducted on Saturday afternoon with a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, 668 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Reverend Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor will serve as celebrant and homilist.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery of Saint Andre Bessette Parish, Dorchester Drive, Dallas. Relatives and friends may join Steven and his family for visitation and shared remembrances of his mother Saturday directly at church from 12 noon until the time of Mass. The North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc. is honored to care for Mrs. Price and her family at this time.
