Bernice’s Obituary Bernice (Barker) Proffitt Bernice was born on March 25, 1928, in Parks, Scott County, Arkansas. Preceded in death by her parents, Edward Haven Barker and Dora Bell (Hart) Barker; husband, Paul Edward Proffitt; son, Terry Gene Proffitt; great-grandson, Matthew Paul Proffitt; and eight of her 10 siblings, Elsie, Cecil, May, Mitt, Lois, Meddie, Nancy (Glea), and Wrex. Survived by her son, Gary (Susan) Proffitt of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Debbie Proffitt of Wichita; brother, Wheeler (Pat) Barker of Wichita; grandchildren, Stacy (Jason) Jensen of Wichita, Amy (Jay) Sherrod of Neodesha, KS, Kelly (Travis) Poland of Leesburg, VA, Nicolas (Laura) Proffitt of Wichita, Joseph Proffitt of Wichita, and Eric (Shannon) Proffitt of Wichita; great-grandchildren, Julie and Erick Sherrod, Jack, Addison, and Isabelle Poland, Makayla Pieratt, Steven, Ryan, and Savannah Proffitt, Taylor Proffitt, Bryan Stoner and Zachary Proffitt.

Special thanks to Bobbie and other staff at Heart and Soul Hospice, as well as the staff at Presbyterian Manor of Wichita, especially during the last three months of her life. The staff of Presbyterian Manor has cared for Bernice beginning May 10, 2009, until the time of her death on March 2, 2019, with constant and loving care. Her family owes everyone a debt of gratitude.

Bernice was active in her church, Waco United Methodist, and later at Asbury Church. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, square dancing, bowling, spending time with family and friends, and took great pride in being a homemaker. Visitation with family present, 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 14, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Rainbows United, 3223 North Oliver Avenue, Wichita, KS 67220 and Asbury Church, 2801 West 15th Street North, Wichita, KS 67203.
