Betty Louise Scarborough Bowman June 18, 1928 – January 3, 2019 PERRY- Betty Scarborough Bowman, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 3, 2019. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with the Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Perry. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, Georgia, at 4:00 p.m., also on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Mrs. Betty grew up in Augusta where many of her family members still reside. She graduated from Tubman High School in Augusta in 1945; Augusta Junior College in 1947; and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary receiving the Bachelor of Religious Education Degree in 1959. As a young musician, she played xylophone and piano, soon giving up the xylophone and focusing on refining her piano skills.

By happenstance, Betty was married to a minister, and she was often given the opportunity to play the piano at the smaller churches where her husband served. Once the churches became larger and her need for weekly performances slimmed, Betty enjoyed playing the piano as often as she could. She taught second grade Sunday School for 70 years and Vacation Bible School through the years and was continuously playing for children, enjoying their sweet voices praising Jesus.

She never wanted any accolades for her volunteer work at churches or in the community; Betty did everything in her life in the name of Jesus. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Perry and was a member of the Avon Buice Sunday School Class. In recent years, Betty chose to pass the second-graders to someone younger, still keeping the nursery for 2-year-olds on occasion.

She was a loving, caring Southern Belle all of her life who will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched through the years. Betty was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Dr. Gene T. Bowman; her parents, Roy, Sr., and Bessie McCoy Scarborough; her brother, Ostell Scarborough, Sr.; her sister, Dixie Helen Scarborough; her brother, Roy Scarborough, Jr.; her niece, Cynthia S. Burr; her nephew, Ed Scarborough; and her great-great-niece, Emily Grace Coker. Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Betty are her sister-in-law, Joyce Scarborough of Augusta; her brothers-in-law, Dr. Bob Bowman (Sharon) of Perry, and Jack Bowman (Claire) of Ocala, FL; and her cousin, Alice Owens of Columbus.

Also surviving are the nieces and nephews of their “Aunt Betty,” Ostell Scarborough, Jr. (Patti) of Greenwood, SC, Terry Scarborough (Harriett) of Augusta, GA, Tim Scarborough (Kim) of Aiken, SC, Patricia Patchen (Josef) of Augusta, GA, R.
