Betty Marie Detrich, 96, stepped into eternity in heaven September 28, 2018. Born January 8, 1922, to Alva & Leta Harrel in Blackwell, OK, an only child, but she had a large, loving extended family of cousins, aunts & uncles. She moved to Wichita, KS in her teens, where she met her husband-to-be, Gerald.

They were married 61 years until his death in 2002. Midwest City was her home for 58 years, with her last 5 years being spent in Cushing. She was a homemaker and Avon representative… Read More » until she went to work for the IRS, from where she retired after 21 years.

Betty was a quilter, seamstress, crafter, bridge player, thinker, observer, holiday celebrator, bowler, golfer, great cook, fervent volunteer and traveler (all 50 states, 22 foreign countries). She transformed herself from a quiet, shy person by joining Toastmasters and competing in speaking contests. After learning golf in 1987, she walked a 9-hole course for 22 years with her friend, Michi Susan, and made a hole-in-one on a par 3, at age 72.

She cheered for OSU, OKC Thunder, Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler. Her best volunteer experience was the winters she and Gerald spent at Campus Crusade for Christ Headquarters. Her son, Dr. Gary (Roz) Detrich of Cushing and daughter, Judy (John) Ferguson of Edmond, survive her.

She is also survived by grandsons, Geoff (Angela) Detrich, Jed (Kim) Ferguson, and Jacob (Callie) Ferguson; precious only granddaughter, Heather (John) Stokes. She adored her great-grandchildren – Addie, Genevieve & Emmery Detrich; Ben, Brady & Brenlea Stokes; Everett Ferguson; and Rory & Ian Ferguson. Viewing will be Wednesday and Thursday, with family receiving friends 1:30-3:00pm Thursday at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home in Midwest City.

Graveside services will be at 4:00 pm, Thursday, Oct. 4, at Arlington Memory Gardens in MWC. Memorial donations may be made to the mission account of Jacob & Callie Ferguson online at allnations.
