Our beloved family matriarch and friend Beverly passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side on July 5, 2018, at age 93 in the Church of God Home, Carlisle, PA. She was born on April 9, 1925, in Chicago, IL as the eldest of four siblings to Margaret (Wells) and Howard Dyslin. Beverly was predeceased by two wonderful husbands, her first, US Army LTC Robert L. McCanna, and the second, US Army COL Neal W. Lovsnes (Ret). Additionally, she leaves behind son, Robert L. McCanna II and his wife Marilyn of Carlisle, PA; daughter, Sharon (Sherry) S. Hargis and her husband US Army LTC Tom E. Hargis (Ret), of Carlisle, PA; and Sharon and Tom’s daughters, Tara M. Robinson and her husband John D. Robinson of Waxhaw, NC, and Caron M. Mesick and her husband Robert M. Mesick, of Waxhaw, NC. Also left behind are her six cherished great grandchildren, Trent and Reese Robinson, and Peyton, Makenzie, Jordyn and Blakely Mesick.
During Beverly’s early years in Chicago, she worked at a local record shop while attending Morgan Park High School and then Morgan Park Junior College. After marrying her childhood sweetheart Robert, she worked at Foote Brothers Gear and Machinery Corporation as one of the iconic “Rosie the Riveters” while her husband fought in Europe during WWII. She had a wonderful fulfilling life as an Army officer’s wife, living in Wetzlar, Germany, Columbus, GA, Athens, OH, Ridgefield, NJ, West Point, NY, Ft.
Leavenworth, KS, Sagamihara, Japan, Ft. Lewis, WA, and Springfield, VA. After first husband Robert passed away suddenly in 1963, she and her two children moved to Carlisle, PA, raising them in the nurturing small town atmosphere of south central PA.
While her children were growing up there, Beverly worked at the Embers Restaurant and Motel and later at CCNB. She later met and married her second husband Neal Lovsnes with whom she shared a blissful marriage, snow birding between Ormond Beach, FL and Carlisle, PA. After Neal passed away suddenly in 1979, she devoted her many remaining active years to gardening, cooking, dancing, playing Bridge with her longtime girlfriends, traveling the globe by herself and with family and friends, and visiting with her adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The waning years of her life were spent quietly and restfully at Cumberland Crossings. Her family appreciates the continuing care received and friendships made there. Beverly’s final comfort care was administered compassionately at Carlisle Regional Medical Center and the Church of God Home in conjunction and with dignity by Celtic Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Chaplain Arlene Dunn officiating. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be held Friday, July 13 at 10:00 a.m. at West Point Cemetery, West Point, NY.
