Billy Gene Benton July 25, 1952 – December 22, 2018 Billy Gene Benton, age 66, died Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Testa Hospice House. Born in Cleveland County on July 25, 1952 he was the son of the late Wilber Marcel Benton and Mary Sue Putnam Benton. Billy served as a paratrooper in the 10th group Special Forces in the U.S. Army.

After leaving service he received his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and earned an Associates Degree from Cleveland Community College. Billy served 22 years as an officer for the City of Kings Mountain Police Department and later for Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office as a Narcotics Captain and retired in 2002. Later he went back to serving part time as an officer for Lincoln County.

He was a member of the 27B Narcotics Task Force, SKL Narcotics Task Force, Blue Ridge Narcotics Task Force, he was also the head of Community Oriented Policing, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and North Carolina Law Enforcement Association. In addition to his parents his was preceded in death by his two brothers; Larry and Gary Benton and an infant sister. Billy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Morrow Benton, one son, Larry Dean Benton and wife Marilyn Bunch Benton of Kings Mountain, one step-son, Kenneth Shane Peterson and wife Rebecca Bricker Peterson, two sisters; Diane Powell of Shelby, Tina Bowen and husband Ricky of Grover, sisters-in-law, Jeanie Benton of Shelby and Sandy Benton of Grover.

Three grandchildren, Kaleb Peterson, Chris Benton and Connor Benton and well as numerous nieces and nephews and beloved canine companions; Apollo, Zeus, and Prissy. Funeral Service will be held 6:30 pm Thursday, December 27, 2018 in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Robert Archie and Rev.
