Billy Ray Kellogg, 80, of Midwest City, Oklahoma returned to his Heavenly Home on July 21, 2018 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Bill was born July 19, 1938, in Konawa, Oklahoma, to William and Connie Kellogg. He graduated from Midwest City High School in 1956; “even after spending 4 years in the 2nd Grade” .
After graduating high school, Bill served in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962; beginning his military career at Whiteman AFB, in Missouri. After returning home from the military, he spent a few years working for Robinson Steel before beginning his lifelong career, of 35 years, as a driver and diesel mechanic for AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Incorporated).
After retirement, Bill established ‘Kellogg’s Truck Barn’ and continued to service the Dairy Farmers of America fleet as well as many independently owned diesel rigs. Bill was always known to be creative and good with his hands. His passion for art began in high school when he served as the Art Editor for the MWCHS Bomber Beam.
His creative talent manifested itself over the years in the many doodles, ‘poems’ and drawings his family now cherishes. His creative way of fixing things always included a flair of ‘southern engineering’. Anyone who knew Bill knew he was the ‘fixer’ or ‘repairer’ of all things; no matter the challenge.
Bill enjoyed many activities. Beginning in his early years, Bill was quite the pool ‘hustler’ where he won many tournaments. He also enjoyed bowling in leagues with family and friends.
Bill also spent many years raising bird dogs and hunting quail. He was like a kid on Christmas morning when quail season began and would always have a good story to tell about how that “covey got away…”; but he would get them next time. He had a passion for fishing no matter the size of lake or pond, by land or boat, Bill loved the thrill of the catch.
As we all know, later in life, golf became Bill’s greatest passion. He worked tirelessly to ‘improve his game’ by spending hours at the driving range or chipping balls in his backyard. Bill joined the Oklahoma City Senior Golf Club in 2002.
There he made lifelong friendships and enjoyed many games of ‘skins’ earning him ‘heavy pockets’ of all the quarters he won. Bill made his first and only Hole in One in October 2001; making this one of the highlights of his golfing career. The second highlight was when he placed 1st at the Pampa Tri-State Senior Tournament in 2014.
Bill took great pride in being the best at everything he did. After retirement, Bill enjoyed traveling the countryside, taking many cruises and making new friends all along the way. As you know, Bill never met a stranger.
If you met him, you loved him. He was loyal, kind, and unwavering in his commitment and love to his family and friends. Bill had a handshake as strong as a vice…and he took great pride in keeping it that way.
He hugged with all his heart and might. Everywhere he went, Bill spread joy and laughter. He will be greatly missed here on Earth by many loved ones and friends, but we know he is being embraced and celebrating with those he loves in Heaven.
We envision him walking down those Streets of Gold, kicking up his heels and all while swinging his 9 iron and making that second Hole in One. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, J.C. Kellogg; parents, William S. and Connie Kellogg; and wife, Violet Louise Kellogg. He is survived by many family and friends who love and will miss him dearly.
Memorial service will be held Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 11:00am at Barnes and Friederich Funeral Home Chapel, 1820 S. Douglas Blvd. , Midwest City, Oklahoma 73130 with internment to follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Elk City, Oklahoma at 4:00pm, 1607 N. Washington Ave, Elk City, Oklahoma 73644. In celebration of Bill’s service, patriotism and love for his country, the family is wearing red, white or blue and welcomes everyone to join.
