OBITUARY Bonnie Dickson Hill March 2, 1943 – November 2, 2018 Bonnie Hill passed away peacefully on November 2, 2018, surrounded by her husband, brothers and children. Born Carol Jordan Dickson, she was a junior to her mother and called Bonnie virtually from birth. She was born in 1943 in Shelby, North Carolina, where her father’s congregation was at the time.
Her family moved to Houston in 1955 where her father was minister at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, and it was her home for the rest of her life. Bonnie graduated from St. John’s School and the University of Houston with a stop in between at University of Texas at Austin. After teaching at the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind twice, she was a founding employee of Nightingale Rehabilitation, who provided support and service to people with multiple handicaps.
She rose to Executive Director there before retiring. She also worked at Rehabilitation Network, assisting persons to re-enter the workforce. Away from work, she was wife to Wayne Hill for almost 48 years and “adventure leader” to their children Sara (Drieux) and Ryan.
She was a Docent at the Houston Zoo, a wildlife rehabilitator, substitute teacher, painter, jewelry maker and storyteller. Bonnie was a member of the Houston Zoomobile team. It was a Houston only project and she found herself in demand to give the lectures in the Cy-Fair and Katy schools using her own animals.
Her whole family is amazed that she was never hit by a car while rescuing a turtle from the road. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents Dr. J Walter and Carol Dickson. She is survived by brothers Walt and wife Donna, Shannon and wife Magdalena, children Sara(Drieux) and husband Brandon, Ryan and wife Valerie, grandchildren Dakota and husband Ben, Griffin, Max, Miles, Cooper and Creed, and great granddaughter Bonnie.
All beings, both two and four legged, enjoyed her legendary love and kindness. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center or the Jane Goodall Institute.
