Obituary for Bruce Giles After a short illness, Bruce Giles, age 66, died peacefully Wednesday, November 28, 2018. He was surrounded by his wife, Vicky, and three daughters, Tori, Lorien and Chelsy. It’s hard to capture Bruce’s spirit in words, as he meant so much to so many.
His infectious smile and love of life touched all who knew him, and he will not ever be forgotten. He was a loving husband to his wife of 39 years, a wonderful father to his three daughters, a talented singer/songwriter and wallpaper hanger, and a dear friend to so many. His intellect, wit, and sense of humor combined with his love of life and amazing voice made friendship with him so easy.
Bruce was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Claude and Mary Giles. He graduated from Avondale High School in 1970 and from the University of Georgia in 1975 with a degree in Sociology. His first job after college was with the DeKalb County Family and Children Services, where he worked as a food stamp caseworker.
It was there that he met his wife, Vicky. Bruce was a talented singer/songwriter, playing in several duos, and later becoming the lead singer in his bands, ‘Old Number 7’ and ‘Get Out of Town,’ where he had quite a following. During these years, the group performed gigs not only in the metro Atlanta area but also in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
He owned his own wallcovering installation company where, for over 35 years, he transformed homes with his unique perfection. He loved the Braves, the Falcons, the Dawgs and his garden, growing crops of vegetables every year that he shared with whomever needed or wanted them. One of his proudest accomplishments is the Fiddlers, which he began as an Easter celebration of camping, friendship and music.
This annual outdoor gathering and musical event spans generations and has touched hundreds, and it will celebrate its 40th year this spring. Bruce – also known as Daddy, Grand Dude, Mayor, and King of the Weasels – formed many lifelong friendships throughout all of these years and will be sorely missed by many. He loved life, his family, his music and his friends.
And they loved him. Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Bruce is survived by his wife, Vicky Giles, daughters and son-in-law, Tori Lee, Lorien and Steven Moran, Chelsy Giles; grandsons, Mason and Jace Moran; brothers, Jim Giles, Bob Giles; sisters-in-law, mother-in law, nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and many, many friends whose life he touched.
