Burt Schonfeld, M.D. of Washington, DC died January 23, 2019 of metastatic gastric cancer at the age of 75. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Paul and Lillian Schonfeld. Burt graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1960, completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University in 1964, and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1968.

He was certified in psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry, and practiced psychiatry for 49 years. In addition to a well-respected private practice in DC, he had worked at the Washington Free Clinic where he served as director of the board, Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic, and Sibley Memorial Hospital where he was an attending physician. Burt enjoyed competitive tennis, Bob Dylan, and the family dogs.

He leaves behind a sea of love with family, friends, and the innumerable people he helped over his medical career. He is survived by his adored wife of 36 years, Gail, and his beloved daughters Ariel and Sophia. Burt is predeceased by his daughter, Marisa.

His humor, wisdom, ability to truly listen and appreciation of people will be remembered by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington, DC. Interment will follow at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg, Maryland.

Shiva will be observed at Washington Hebrew Congregation at 7 pm on Sunday, January 27 and Monday, January 28. Memorial contributions may be made to the Risa Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
