Calvin H. “Cal” Voigt, 91, passed away May 23, 2018 at the Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. Cal was born September 22, 1926 on a farm near Avon, South Dakota, the son of Herbert and Florence (Bochman) Voigt. Following High School he joined the Marine Corps.

While on leave from Boot Camp he returned to Avon to marry the love of his life, Verda Mae Weidenbach. Following his discharge they returned to Avon. In 1958 Cal and his family moved to Thermopolis where he accepted a position with KWRB television and KRTR radio where he was program director and broadcaster for many years.

During his career there he broadcast over 800 sporting events. In 1970 he was selected High School Sports’ Booster of the Year and in 1997 was given a lifetime pass to all interscholastic events by the WY High School Activities Association. He was named on of the inaugural members of the Hot Springs County High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

Following the sale of the television and radio station in 1973, Cal started his career at Coast-to-Coast Hardware (now Thermopolis Hardware). In 1992 he retired to help care for his wife Verda, and to answer the call to officiate funerals for the many families of those that he came to know over the years. In addition to being an active member of the First Baptist Church where he served in many capacities, he was also active in the community.

He served Thermopolis and Hot Springs County as vice chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross Chairman, School Board Treasurer, and as a member of the City Planning Commission, the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. In addition, at one time or another, he served on the Little League board of directors, the K-12 math curriculum committee, the board of directors of the Big Horn Basin Children’s Center, PTA and the Senior Center board. He was also an honorary member of the Shoshoni FFA chapter, the Wind River FFA chapter and the Dubois Fire Department.

Cal loved theatre and appeared in many productions over the years, as well as being a popular emcee for various community events. Preceding him in death was his wife, Verda. He is survived by his sons, Colin of Littlefield, AZ, Gregg of Thermopolis, Bart of Dallas, TX, Darry of Casper and daughter Melanie Blynn of Freyburg, ME, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great, grandchildren.
