Great uncle, great-great uncle, and great-great-great uncle to many. Carl F. Russo, born Fortunato Russo, on February 28, 1916 in the Community of Partanna, Sicily, Italy, where he would play with his brother on the grounds of a nearby castle. His mother moved Fortunato… Read More » and his three siblings to the United States where her parents and sisters already lived.

They landed at Ellis Island and were told to change Fortunato’s name an American-like name, so they chose Carl, but kept Fortunato as his middle name. His mother worked at a seamstress to support the family. Carl became a U.S. Citizen on February 24, 1939.

On January 22, 1941, he joined the Army Air Corp (now the Air Force) where he served as an aircraft mechanic instructor. After his military service ended on November 17, 1945, he worked various jobs and ended up working for the U.S. Post Office in downtown Chicago. In 1972, after 16 years of service, he broke his back lifting an over-filled mail bin.

He remained on compensation until his death. Carl loved to swim, go for long walks, and read. The last 10 years of his life he was declared legally blind, so books on tape took the place of his reading.

He also listened to radio, especially political stations. He loved a good political argument. His hobby was Hi-Fi (High Fidelity).

He thoroughly enjoyed listening to his large collection of classical records on his very large speakers and playing them on the turntable himself; something he was very proud of. He belonged to a club of Hi-Fi-ers that met from time to time. Services are pending.
