Obituary of Carmela Portelli Carmela “Millie” Portelli, (nee Costa), 89, of Paterson, passed away on April 18, 2018 surrounded by her family. Carmela was born in Paterson on July 15, 1928 to the late John and Rose Costa. For many years, she was the sole proprietor of the Costa family business which dealt in wholesale and retail produce.

It became The Corner Grocery store when she took ownership. After retiring, she worked at Meyer Brothers, the premier department store in Paterson’s heyday and continued with them when they moved to Wayne. Millie was known for her generosity and kindness.

Many grownups today remember her from when they were children as the lady who patiently sold them candy as they took an eternity to make up their minds. Her friends remember her sense of humor and compassion. Her home was always a haven for many broken spirits.

May she be welcomed into heaven by her beloved husband Joseph, her parents, her cousins and numerous pets. She was the cherished mother of Angela, Remo and Frank Portelli and the dear sister of Maria Costa and is also survived by many cousins. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-7pm at Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave.

, Woodland Park, NJ. A funeral service will begin on Monday at 10am at Santangelo Funeral Home. Guests may arrive at 9am.

Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa.
