, OH, Xavier and Jude Markey-Smith of New York, NY; also survived by 20 nieces and nephews. Carol grew up in the Bronx, NY, the younger of two daughters of George and Catherine Stengle. After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College with a degree in communications, she married Edward Patrick Markey in 1958.

The two lived in South Burlington, VT, where they raised their children, Ed and Kathryn. Though her Bronx accent never left her, Carol quickly became part of the greater Burlington community. She was always busy with activities shared by a large group of friends, many of whom were connected to St. Michael’s College, where her husband was the basketball coach, baseball coach and athletic director.

In the 1960s she was a driving force in the college’s social organizations, known at that time as “The Ladies of Saint Michael’s” and “The Faculty Wives”. Once her children were in high school, Carol entered the workforce, first serving as a bookkeeper for a local confection wholesaler. Her outstanding organizational skills and enthusiastic personality made her perfectly suited for her position.

Later, Carol took a position at Vermont Federal Bank and rose to manager of several branches. She was regarded as one of the bank’s most admired and respected managers. After she and her husband retired in 1995, they left the cold Vermont winters behind and moved to Cape Canaveral, FL, where they lived for more than 20 years.

Carol and Ed made the most of their retirement, regularly enjoying the ocean, concerts and theater productions in central Florida. Carol especially enjoyed hosting family and friends for a long visit or just a dinner filled with laughs and stories. The Markeys were loyal parishioners at Saint John Vianney in South Burlington and Our Savior parish in Cape Canaveral.

After moving to Beachwood, OH in 2016, Carol was cared for by the loving and generous aides of the Beachwood Commons community (Beachwood, Ohio) and The Hospice of the Western Reserve. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathryn “Kay” Kelly, who passed away on Feb. 16, 2019.
