Catherine Helen Gillen, age 95 of Upper Sandusky died on Monday March 18, 2019 in Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 13, 1923 in Kings Lynn, England to Harry Southwell and Ada (White) Osborne.
She married George A. Gillen on Feb. 20, 1946 and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1997.
Surviving is a daughter Barbara Jean Smith and a son John George Gillen, both of Upper Sandusky, five grandchildren Jeremy (Brenda) Lamb, Melissa (Michael) Breidenbach, Aaron Smith, Logan Gillen, Keegan Gillen, five great grandchildren Colton Breidenbach, Cassidy Breidenbach, Levi Lamb, Lexi Lamb, Stella Gillen. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins in England and the United States. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Osborne, sisters Frances Grange and Mary Milton.
Catherine graduated from King’s Lynn High School for girls in 1940 and Felt and Tarrant Business School in London in 1941. She was a homemaker, worked as a bookkeeper and babysat. She also worked at USHS cafeteria for 10 years and for Dr. Lautermilch in Upper Sandusky.
Catherine was an active member of Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church where she was a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was also a member of the International Friendship Club. Catherine volunteered at St. Peter’s and South Schools as a kindergarten aide, mentor, tutor, and library aide.
For hobbies she enjoyed flowers, gardening, playing cards with her friends, traveling with George and watching her great grandchildren in their activities. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday March 22, 2019 at 11:00am in Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
Visitation will be on Thursday March 21, 2019 from 4pm-7pm with a prayer and CLC Service. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic School or Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in care of Bringman Clark Funeral Home 226 E. Wyandot Ave. Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
