Charles Arnold Bear made his peaceful transition April 28, 2019. Born December 1, 1926, in Oakland, CA, to loving parents Charles McGriff and Mary Grimm Bear, Charles is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Joyce V. Bear, and his brother Donald Bear. Charles is survived by his brother James Bear, children Christine, Charles H., Mary and Carol, wonderful grandchildren, Alan, Jennifer, Terra, great-grandsons Anthony and Christian, and many nieces and nephews.
Charles met the love of his life, Joyce, in 1950. In 1951, Charles and Joyce moved to Sacramento where he was an art teacher for over 30 years for the San Juan Unified School District. He also worked weekends as Special Delivery for USPS and owned and operated a Crystal Dairy home delivery business for some time.
While raising four children, the years were filled with traveling throughout the United States and the world, playing the French horn and drums in symphonies, square dancing, biking, fishing trips, attending plays and opera. Upon retirement, Charles and Joyce moved to Dunsmuir to enjoy the beauty of Mt. Shasta region.
Relocating back to Sacramento, Charles continued to be active attending San Francisco State University alumni reunions, swimming at the Y, and, for the past few years, a more quiet routine of breakfast every day at local restaurants and family celebrations. Charles greeted all he met with kindness and was quick to share the humor of the moment. Beloved by all, a common sentiment expressed: Charles is a role model for living life to the fullest!
