Charles Lovell Lucas, 70, of Edgewater, Florida died Sunday April 28th at Halifax Health in Edgewater. Charles is survived by his son, Charlie Marshall-Lucas and his wife, Amanda; two grandchildren, Arian and Archer Marshall-Lucas; brother, Steve Lucas; sister Debbie Angel (Lucas) and her husband Bob; and nephew Stephen Lucas. Everyone called him Charlie, unless he was in the company of his father Charley and/or his son Charlie.

Then he was either “Charles” or “Big Charlie”. Charles grew up in Kentucky and was drafted to serve in Vietnam, beginning his service in 1968. He was a radio carrier in the Army Infantry, and after 18 months of combat duty he attended the US Army Data Processing school.

He worked in data operations for the Army using punch cards to load computer programs and information until he left the army in late 1971. Through the GI Bill, he completed a 2-year program focused on programming and software design. From 1974 -1999 he worked on many large-scale institutional software conversion projects, including some to address “Y2K” bugs.

Charles disliked the cold Midwestern winters, and moved to central FL in 1983, being impressed by the warm weather and the nearby space program. He enjoyed traveling, especially road trips to places such as Branson, MO and Niagara Falls. He liked to visit Sea World and Busch Gardens with his family.

For many years he changed cars more often than he shaved his beard, but didn’t buy himself a brand new car until his 70th birthday. Charles’ easy-going personality and ability to converse with anyone about anything, ensured he made friends wherever he went. He enjoyed shooting pool, playing darts, and bowling with his friends and his brother, Steve.

Basic military honors will be held at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens in Edgewater, Florida on Wednesday morning.
