Charles “Chic” William Gilgore, 84, died peacefully, Friday July 13, 2018 at Glendale Home, surrounded by family. Chic was born in Schenectady, NY to the late William R. and Florence Swart Gilgore. He was raised in Scotia & lived there most of his life.

He graduated from Scotia High School in 1951 and Dartmouth College in 1955, and then served in the US Navy for four years. He was an officer aboard the USS Piper. After active duty he served in the Naval Reserve for 20 years, achieving the rank of Commander.

Chic married his high-school sweetheart, Marian Miles, on June 15, 1955. After the active duty years living in Norfolk, VA and Groton, CT, Chic and Marian settled back in Scotia. Chic worked at the hardware store started by his grandfather, Gilgore & Son, and also for the Office of Naval Intelligence.

In 1966 he began a 25 year career at General Electric in Schenectady. He was the Manager of Plant Protection of Security. Chic retired in 1991.

Vacations with his family began first in summer cottages at Cape Cod and then many camping trips in the Adirondacks, a place he loved. After retirement, Chic and Marian enjoyed traveling together and spending time at their camp “Loon’s Nest” on Lake Clear in the Adirondacks. Chic was a member of the 1st Reformed Church of Scotia, serving on consistory.

He was a 50 year member of Scotia Rotary and also served on the Scotia-Glenville School Board and the Glenville Town Board. Chic is survived by Marian, his wife of 63 years; sons, Ken Gilgore (Carol) and Dana Gilgore (Darlene Harris); and daughter, Martha Gilgore (Lonnie Hojnacki); 10 grandchildren, Kelly, Rob, David, Steve, Phil, Megan, Erica, Amy, Alex and Miranda; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Klofenstein (Rex), Fairfax, VA; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Chic will be remembered as a generous and caring man, as a husband and father to his family, and as a good friend to the many people’s lives he touched.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church of Scotia, on Ballston Ave. (There will be no calling hours. ) In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Fowler, located in the Adirondacks (mailing address, 1790 Grand Blvd.
