Charles F. Combs, affectionately called “Brother” by his siblings, age 96, passed Monday, March 18, 2019. He was born November 7, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio, the oldest of six children, to Charles Henry Combs and Lottie Mae Keith. He was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Class of 1941.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, World War II, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in which he worked Special Delivery. He was a lifelong member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Charles loved his family.

He was always present to help, support or encourage his family regardless of the situation or circumstance. Easy smile, few words, no long speeches. He gave advice when asked.

When not asked for advice, he gave wisdom to make you think about what you did, or maybe what you should give thought to doing. He had a never ending thirst for reading. His quest in reading was for knowledge and information.

Preceded in death by wife of 62 years, Pauline J. Redden Combs; siblings, Dorothy, William “Billy”, Phyllis, Robert “Bobby” and Carolyn. He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Melvin) Coleman; son, Larry (Linda) Combs; grandson, Dr. Efrem McAdoo (Nakia); a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Graveside service will be held 10:15 am Monday, April 1, 2019 at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 W. Third Street.
