Charlotte “Charlie” Goldthorpe Straub July 23, 1947 – May 10, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Upload Photo| Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card| Memorial Donation Charlotte Goldthorpe “Charlie” Straub (nee: Patterson), 71 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019, at her home following a lengthy illness. Charlie was born July 23, 1947, in Corbin, KY, where she was raised before she moved to South Amherst where she graduated from South Amherst High School. In 1998, Charlie married her husband, David Straub, and together they owned and operated Straub’s Maintenance Service until her retirement in 2015.

Charlie was an avid backpacker and world traveler. She felt at home in many places and her hiking and travel took her to all parts of the globe including Nepal, Thailand, the Caribbean, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. She explored the continental United States from shore to shore and cruised Alaska two times.

During one of her hikes, she met Senator Joe Biden while exploring the Shenandoah National Park. Charlie was an outgoing and gregarious person who could make everyone laugh. She once won a dance contest not even knowing there was a contest going on.

There are certain people that make the world a better place just by being in it. Charlotte “Charlie” Straub was one of those people. Survivors include her loving husband of 20 years David G. Straub: her children Tina (Joe) Gonzalez; Phillip (Sarah) Morgan; Todd (Jaime) Whorton; her siblings Fred, Jean, and Morris; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Rosie (David) Gillespie, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Charlie was preceded in death by her siblings Frank, Arthur, Lois, Darlene, Thomas, Irene, Betty, and Roger; and her parents Jessie and Thelma Patterson (nee: Mills). Friends may call Monday, May 13, 2019, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave. , Amherst.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home. Burial will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association; 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047.
