He was the fourth child born to Fred and Anna Wirtz. He lived his first six years of life on the family homestead north of Outlook, known as the Muddy Flat.

In 1936, his family moved into town and Chester began attending school in Outlook. During his youth, he attended to the chores of raising milk cows and chickens and celebrated the days when he was able to buy penny candy with his the allowance he and his brother, Melvin, were allowed to keep. While in high school, Chester participated in the sports activities of basketball and track.

He especially loved to participate in running events, particularly the 440-yard dash. Chester graduated from Outlook in 1948. After high school graduation, Chester continued to work on the family farm, except for the months employed at the Fort Peck Dam Project.

In 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force and was trained at the Air Craft Engine Mechanic School in Sheppard AFB, Texas. Upon graduation, he earned recognition as a staff sergeant and chief aircraft mechanic. He was discharged in 1955.

Chester was grateful for his experience in the Air Force, as he enjoyed the travel, especially the time spent in England and Japan and the life-long friendships he made along the way. Upon completion of service duty, Chester returned to the Outlook area and started farming. In the spring of 1959, he met his future wife, Grace Cybulski.

They were married on February 13, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Plentywood. The couple made their home in Outlook and raised three children. Chester served on various boards in the Outlook community including: Fire Department, Farmers Oil Company, and Farmers Elevator Board.

He also served two terms as city mayor. He retired from farming in 2010. Chester’s hobbies included woodworking, and gardening.

He loved fishing, especially his annual trips to Canada with his buddies. He was well known for making pancakes and traditional German sausage, and gladly shared his recipes. He frequented sporting events, especially basketball tournaments and was an avid supporter of the Outlook Blue Jays.

He attended St. Boniface parish in Outlook and later St. Joseph’s parish in Plentywood. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. A most admirable character trait of Chester was his genuine gratitude for the community in which he lived.

He was appreciative of being able to live with the land, nature and wildlife, and the people he dearly loved. His grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy. He was always interested in their activities and supported them whole-heartedly.

Those who knew him, found Chester to be the “ultimate optimist”. He died on April 19, 2019 due to complications from cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Fred Wirtz and brothers, Arnold Wirtz, Lewis Wirtz and Melvin Wirtz.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, three children, Carol Wirtz, Linda Ruegsegger (Bill), Greg Wirtz (Denise) and four grandchildren, Greg Ruegsegger (Hannah), Natalie Ruegsegger, Austin Wirtz, and Reese Wirtz, his siblings, Isabelle Bedwell, Ed Wirtz (Rhee), and JoAnn Wirtz, Sister-in-law, Kathy Wirtz, several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
