Claude Wallace Chappelear passed to his eternal rest on June 4, 2018. He was married to the love of his life, Nina James Chappelear, for sixty-three years. She preceded him in death.

Chap, as most referred to him, was born on September 13, 1926 to Claude Wilmon Chappelear and Rachael Memory Howell Chappelear in Bennettsville, SC. His siblings were James Chappelear, Alice White, Betty Gibbs, Jack Chappelear and Hugh Chappelear. Claude and Nina had no children. Chap was a member of the Greatest Generation. He served as a merchant seaman during WWII and later was drafted into the US Marine Corps.

He was very proud of his service to his country. In his early years he worked for Standard Brands in sales and marketing. He attended the Chicago School of Culinary Arts during his years with Standard Brands where he became interested in food preparation and baking.

He was a skilled chef and baker. He was the principal owner of Barclay Enterprises where he owned and operated multiple restaurants in the Charlotte, Raleigh, and Myrtle Beach areas for many years. Among his restaurants were Slug’s Rib, Slug’s Choice, and the Barclay Cafeteria at the South Park Shopping Center.

During those years his generosity and charity prompted him to feed many who were unable to do so. If he learned that a diner was from Bennettsville, SC, or a friend of some family member he would always pick up the check. As a thirty year plus member of the Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church, he leaves behind many loyal parishioners and friends.

He specifically wanted to thank Pastor Ron Tippens for the love and care that he provided for Nina during her long illness.
