Clifford’s Obituary Charley and Pauline Swartout brought baby Cliff home to join his 7 sisters and 1 brother. He attended Marquam grade school for eight years. Later in his teen age years Uncle Sam said “we need a few good men”.

Mom said “No”. Cliff was drafted and served his time with the medics at Fort Lewis , WA . Mom preserved and after the last shot was fired, he was sent home with and honorable discharge, to help mom on the farm.

Cliff met Betty in the bean field in the summer of 1954. They were married on June 3, 1955 . David was born July 29, 1956 and Dale May 9, 1959.

We bought the family farm in 1957 from his mom. Cliff, Howard and several friends and neighbors helped to build Mom a new house in Marquam. We joined the Scotts Mills grange in 1969.

Cliff began his career with the Oregon State Park Department in 1965. Cliff had been involved in 4 Mason Lodges in Oregon as a life member. He was a better person because of it!

His problem with congestive heart failure forced his retirement in 1986. He had been a lifetime member of the Marquam United Methodist Church . One of his fondest memories is walking over to the church with neighbor Duane to help build a fire in the wood burning stove to warm the sanctuary worship services a bit before.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, sons, David and wife, Carol, Dale and wife, Carla; 4 grandchildren and their spouses, 6 great-grandchildren, sister, Kathleen and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed!
