OBITUARY Colonel Myron Warren Rose February 23, 1931 – November 12, 2018 Colonel Myron Warren Rose (Ret. ) February 23, 1931 – November 12, 2018 Colonel Myron Warren Rose (Ret. ) passed away, most appropriately, on Veterans Day, November 12, 2018.
Myron was born February 23, 1931 in Williston, ND, to loving parents Warren Cushman Rose, and Myrtle Barrett Rose, with devoted eldest sisters Dorothy Rose Hokinson, and Mavis Rose Sogard. Myron played on All State Football and Basketball teams at Williston High School before he accepted an appointment to The United States Military Academy at West Point in 1950. He played Tackle for the Football team under Colonel Red Blaik and Coach Vince Lombardi, and was known as either “Bear”, or “Rosy”.
As a West Point plebe, Myron met Patsy Scarlett Moorman, from Bethesda, MD, the reigning Lux Soap Beauty Queen, on a blind date, under the south goalpost after the 1950 Army-Navy football game. They married upon his graduation in June 1954. Myron and Pat’s first duty station was Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas.
It was also their last in 1975-78, when Myron retired from the Army to work as a liaison defense contractor to Fort Bliss and White Sands Missile Range. During Col. Rose’s (Ret.
) 24 year military career with Army Air Defense, he served in 28 duty stations, including Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Defense Intelligence Agency, Army War College, Ft. Leavenworth, Ft. Carson, Ft.
Sill, Ft. Benning, and ARADCOM. Distinctions include: National Defense Service Medalist (1st OLC); Army Commendation Medal (2d OLC); Vietnam Service Medal; Parachutist Badge; Meritorious Service Medal; RVN Gallantry Cross w/Palm; RVN Gallantry Cross w/Silver Star; RVN Campaign; Combat Infantryman’s Badge Air Medal.
For such a serious professional, he was known as a fun-loving and personal friend by many. Perhaps it was the long winters in North Dakota, but he seems to have inherited from his family a love of all games – Cards, Rumi cube, Darts, Horseshoes, or just any game. He had to go early and stay late at St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Raphael Catholic Churches in order to greet all of his friends there.
Myron never met an ice cream sundae he didn’t eat, and he never saw a western movie he didn’t love. He particularly enjoyed John Wayne films. Over and over, and over.
Frankly, John Wayne wished he was as much of a tough, good guy as Myron Rose. He certainly appreciated all his friends who helped him this last year at Regent Care Center of El Paso: Dr. Christine Hernandez, Jonathan, Sandy, Cathy, Maurice, Juan, Celia, Grace, Irene, Blanca, Amber, and his Dallas Cowboys BFF, Cathy, Liz. His family deeply appreciates them, and his dedicated doctors, Dr. John Taylor and Dr. Rey Rosario, and many other physicians and specialists for helping him fight the good fight these past years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patsy Scarlett Rose, son Michael W. Rose (Kimberly), daughter Marie S. Rose (Chris), as well as grandchildren Kelly Rose Durham (Carter), Katie Rose Anderson (Devin), Taylor Rose (Jenny), Barrett Rose (Allie), ten great grandchildren, as well his loving sister, Mavis Rose Sogard of Williston, N.D. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 6pm-8pm with a Rosary at 6:45pm at Martin Funeral Home East located at 1460 George Dieter Dr., El Paso, TX 79936. Mass will be held at 12 pm – 1 pm on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at St. Raphael Church located at 2301 Zanzibar Rd. El Paso, TX 79925.
Interment Service will be held at 1:30pm – 2pm at the Ft. Bliss National Cemetery located at 5200 Fred Wilson Ave. El Paso, TX 79906 The family requests that those who wish to may make a donation to the American Veterans charity of their choosing, or send a floral tribute to Martin Funeral Home East, El Paso, Texas 79936.
