OBITUARY Constance C. Tolmas August 12, 1928 – September 24, 2018 Constance Cohen Tolmas (Connie), cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away of natural causes on Monday, September 24, at the age of 90. She was born in Dallas on August 12, 1928, to Harry and Sadie Waldman Cohen. After graduating from Highland Park High School, she majored in art at the Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans.
It was there that she met the love of her life, Dr. Hyman C. Tolmas (Doc). Having been diagnosed with melanoma, she returned to Dallas to fight and win her battle over the cancer while attending SMU. She then returned to Newcomb College where she reunited with Doc, whom she married on July 9, 1950.
They made their home in New Orleans, where they raised their two children, Jeanie and Alan, and lived for 55 years. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced them to evacuate the city to Houston. Then, due to the flooding of New Orleans, they went to Dallas to be with Alan, his wife, Gina, and their granddaughters, Sheina and Cara, where they lived the remaining years of their lives.
In addition to being a homemaker and supporting Doc in his busy pediatric practice, Connie was an active volunteer for decades in many organizations in New Orleans. Through the National Council of Jewish Women, she organized and operated an arts and crafts program in which volunteers made gifts that were delivered on a regular basis to the sick children at Charity Hospital of New Orleans. Connie was a cherished member of Congregation Shir Chadash in Metairie, LA, where she served two terms as president of its Sisterhood.
Other organizations to which she devoted time included the Southern Branch of the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism, where she served as president, and the State of Israel Bonds where she, along with Doc, received the 1993 Aliyah Award of the Year for their many years of commitment to the Israel Bonds program. Connie was a uniquely talented artist, having produced beautiful works in watercolor and acrylics. She also created lovely needlepoint pieces and cozy knitted afghans.
She was a warm, kind, welcoming person who liked to laugh and who greeted everyone with a beautiful smile. She had a generosity of spirit, a great sense of humor, was fun and a pleasure to be around. Her priority was to provide love and support to her family.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Connie was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Hyman C. Tolmas, her sister, Janice Pastor, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jeanie Tolmas, her son, Alan Tolmas and his wife, Gina, her granddaughters, Sheina Tolmas and Cara Tolmas, her treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 27th, at 10:30 am at Tiferet Israel Congregation, 10909 Hillcrest Rd. , followed by interment at Sparkman-Hillcrest Cemetery, 7405 Northwest Hwy. In lieu of flowers, Connie would prefer donations be made to Tiferet Israel Congregation in Dallas, Jewish Children’s Regional Service in Metairie, Louisiana, Congregation Shir Chadash in Metairie, Louisiana, any animal shelter/rescue organization or other charity of your choice.
