Cynthia Mary (Smith) Scott, 81, of Newport, Oregon passed away on May 1, 2019 of congestive heart failure. She was born on October 17, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois and raised by her parents William Murray Smith and Virginia (McKenzie) Smith in San Diego, California. After graduating from The Bishop’s School in San Diego, Cynthia worked in Wyoming and attended Colorado Women’s College where she drove around in her Porsche with her guild guitar and a saddle in the backseat.

A few years later she was back in California, teaching pre-school. In the mid ‘60s, Cynthia met and married Bill Scheffel. Within a few years, they were blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Lara.

Cynthia loved dancing. She taught ballet, tap and jazz for years at her own studio. And she loved hospitality, taught by her mother as more of a profession than a duty.

She was a successful B&B innkeeper for many years in northern California. This is where she met her soulmate Don Weller in 2001. Cynthia and Don moved to Newport in 2004 to establish the Ona Beach B&B and immediately burst upon the live music and dance scene.

Wherever there was good dance music, from the Attic Lounge to the Italian Riviera, to the PAC, to the clubs, to the Traveler’s Cove in Florence and the Jazz Station in Eugene, that’s where you would find them living life to the fullest – dancing every dance. Don & Cynthia married in 2011 and loved being together every minute since. Cynthia especially loved hosting INHOUSE Jazz events in her home.

They really brought out the sparkle in her eyes! Most of all she loved her friends. So many wonderful friends.

She so appreciated you. Cynthia is survived by her husband, Donald Weller; two children, Kimberly Leard and Lara Scheffel; three grandchildren, Chad, Ryann & Kennedey (KC); and one great-granddaughter, Laveya. Please give to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers (www.
